With more than 130 spellbinding works,
Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master presents a trove of exceptionally beautiful paintings and studies, many never before seen in this country. Barocci was one of the most innovative Italian artists of the second half of the sixteenth century and was highly sought by both religious and secular patrons. A major influence on European masters from the 16th to 18th centuries, Barocci's art combines the beauty of the High Renaissance and the dynamism of the Baroque.
Curated by Judith W. Mann, curator of European art to 1800, with Babette Bohn, consulting curator, Texas Christian University, Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master will be on view in the Main Exhibition Galleries from October 21, 2012 through January 20, 2013. The exhibition travels to the National Gallery, London, February 27–May 19, 2013.
Federico Barocci: Renaissance Master has been organized by the Saint Louis Art Museum in association with the National Gallery, London, in collaboration with the Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico delle Marche – Urbino, and the Polo Museale Fiorentino, Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence, and with generous support of the Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
The presentation is supported by BMO Private Bank. The exhibition and symposium in St. Louis are supported in part by Sotheby's. Financial assistance has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. This exhibition is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support has been provided by Emerson.

Barocci and His World
Theodore Rabb, Professor of History, Emeritus, Princeton University
Italian artist Federico Barocci (1533-1612), lived during a time of great transition. Religious institutions were being challenged, the balances of power and commerce were shifting, and artists were moving away from the measured rationality of the Renaissance to the drama of the Baroque.
Professor Rabb, an authority on Early Modern Europe, has published widely on the period and contributes to a number of periodicals, including
Past and Present and
The New York Review of Books. His books include
Renaissance Lives: Portraits of an Age (1993) and
