ANCIENT AMERICAN ART

Representing numerous cultures in the Americas and Caribbean, the Ancient American collection contains works in ceramic, stone, wood, metal, shell, and textiles. Areas of particular depth include the earliest cultures of Central Mexico and their Teotihuacan and Aztec successors, the Zapotec of Oaxaca, and examples of Maya art showcasing the ballgame and hieroglyphic writing. Highlights of the collection include a Mixteca-Puebla mosaic Jaguar Pectoral, a Taino wooden Ritual Seat, and a silver Chimú Disc with images of spondylus shells. The exceptional strength of the collection comes from the generosity of Morton D. May, whose gifts comprise 84 percent of the Ancient American collection.
