THE EAST BUILDING
The project reaches a milestone—Substantial Completion—as the contractor officially turns over the building to the Museum. Landscaping begins but is interrupted due to extreme conditions of heat and drought.
As exterior construction nears completion, East Building gallery finishing touches are completed. In the Main Building, 18 reimagined galleries have opened. The two Buildings, Main and East, are tied together; and the new Information Desk arrives and is installed in Sculpture Hall. Work begins to rebuild the South Terrace, and the new Service Dock and Staff Entrance near completion.
Concrete panels are tilted up and placed on the exterior of the East Building. Flooring materials begin to be installed throughout new and renovated areas. In the South Building, work continues on the new Education Center, and extensive Auditorium renovations begin.
The East Building is officially sealed to the elements.
The exterior panels are poured, set, and polished; the new restaurant kitchen is laid out; mechanical systems are brought on line; and new boilers provide heat for the entire Museum Campus. In early November, the renovated Museum Shop opens.
Workers construct beds in which to create the East Building’s polished exterior concrete panels. Inside, the new Grand Stair is set in place.
Electricity is connected. Concrete coffers for the East Building ceiling are poured on-site.
Vertical elements of the East Building rise, and its fundamental structure takes shape.
Throughout the year, major excavation and construction takes place on the Museum Campus.
Work begins on the new Grand Stair, and by winter, the new below-grade Parking Garage is well underway.
Tower cranes arrive and excavation progresses.
London-based Sir David Chipperfield is appointed architect for the Museum’s expansion project; Michel Desvigne is appointed landscape architect.
The Museum’s Board of Commissioners appoints an Architectural Selection Advisory Committee.
