Scene 18: Ferguson Group; The Landing of Gen. Jackson has just gone on view in the special exhibition gallery. Museum Members will find this scene quite familiar – it’s on the cover of the most recent issue of the Saint Louis Art Museum magazine.
The “Ferguson Group” in the title is a collection of mounds from the Ferguson Plantation in Mississippi. Unlike many other locations in the panorama, this group is a real archaeological site where Dickeson excavated. In fact, two objects that Dickeson excavated from this site are on view in the Museum gallery.
So why the jump from Scene 14 to Scene 18? Well, on Thursday, July 12 at 11:00 am and on Friday, July 13 at 6:00 pm, Vin Steponaitis will give a gallery talk about this scene. Dr. Steponaitis, Professor and Director of Research Labs of Archaeology, University of North Carolina, is currently conducting excavations at this mound group (now known as the Feltus site). He will discuss both his own excavations and those of Dickeson, so if you’re interested in archaeology, come check out either talk. As always, the gallery talks are completely free.
