The French soldiers established at Fort Rosalie, Mississippi, mistreated the local Natchez people until November 28, 1729, when the Natchez attacked the fort and defeated them. Egan sensationalizes his subject matter, employing garish colors for the attire of the Natchez and the uniforms of the French, and foregrounding the gruesome elements of the battle.
