Madam Le Brun, Court Painter to Marie Antoinette Michael Yonan, Associate Professor Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Art, Department of Art History and Archaeology, University of Missouri-Columbia
The daughter of a painter and a hairdresser, Elisabeth-Louise Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842) began painting professionally while in her early teens. As a young wife and mother, she became a favorite artist for the French nobility and for Queen Marie Antoinette. Throughout Le Brun’s long and accomplished career, she received accolades, prestigious commissions, and honors from the leading art academies of the day. Join us to explore the fascinating life and work of one of the most important woman artists of the 18th century.
