Special Exhibition and Programs for Fall
The Museum's main fall exhibition features the work of the St. Louis-born artist Joe Jones (1909–1963). Joe Jones: Painter of the American Scene explores Jones's work between 1930 and 1942, the period during which the artist's social and artistic experiences in St. Louis served as the foundation for his most vital work. Jones's paintings, drawings, photographs, and prints provide a portrait of a country wrestling with economic disaster.

Joe Jones: Painter of the American Scene will be on view from October 10, 2010, through January 2, 2011, in the Main Exhibition Galleries. The exhibition is supported by an iPod audio tour and a video about Jones's early life.
Photographs from the Great Depression
An exhibition of photographs from the Great Depression will open in galleries on the third level of the Museum on September 24.

Portrait of Depression Era America features 22 prints by photographers working during the depths of the Depression, most of whom were associated with the Farm Security Administration (FSA). They include Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Arthur Rothstein, and Dorothea Lange. These photographers produced powerful black and white images which combined journalism with an artistic sensibility. More than half the prints in this exhibition were taken specifically for the FSA and were circulated in magazines, books, and exhibitions.
New Classrooms and Dedicated School Entry
As part of the Art Museum's expansion currently underway, a dedicated school and tour group entrance, located to the south of the Museum, will lead visitors to an expanded Education Center. St. Louis-based TAO + Lee Associates, Inc. has been selected as architect for the South Building Education Center.
Three-Day Institute Brings Together Beginning Teachers
During summer 2010, the Saint Louis Art Museum conducted its first Mini-Institute for Beginning Teachers, collaborating with the Piasa Bluffs Writing Project and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. For three days in August, a diverse and inspiring group of twelve teachers explored inquiry as a stance for learning within and beyond the walls of the Museum engaging in looking, writing, reading, art-making, performing, and collaborating in new and innovative ways.

Among the range of activities were the chance to create non-verbal responses to works of art in the collection, to get outside the Museum through a place-based learning project in Forest Park, and to prototype an individual teaching and learning experience connected to the Museum. The Museum looks forward to offering a similar rewarding program next summer.
BioBlitz 2010 with Cole Elementary School
On September 10th, students from Cole Elementary School had the exciting opportunity to participate in the 2010 BioBlitz — a 24-hour inventory of life in Forest Park led by the Academy of Science St. Louis. Working with staff and volunteers from the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo, students enjoyed nature excursions in the park where they observed and sketched the local habitat. As part of the event's opening ceremony, students had a special chance to meet Mayor Francis Slay, and hear from several notable St. Louis leaders involved with the BioBlitz event.

This special event kicked off the second year of the Saint Louis Art Museum's partnership with Cole Elementary School, a program that has been made possible through the Museum's collaboration with Saint Louis Public Schools and the Saint Louis Zoo's WildCare Institute Center for Conservation in Forest Park. This program brings together art and science and in a way that helps students develop their observation and critical thinking skills while also gaining an awareness of their local environment.
Master Teacher Reflects on Experience
Each summer the Master Teacher Summer Fellowship Program offers an exemplary educator from the St. Louis area the opportunity to pursue advanced study and research at the Museum. The 2010 Fellow was Carla Tuetken, a visual arts teacher at Hazelwood West High School in the Hazelwood School District.

Reflecting on her time here at the Museum this summer, Carla says:

"The experience at the Saint Louis Art Museum provided me with a wonderful opportunity to spend more time with the artwork, museum educators, teens, and docents. When one of my teaching colleagues asked what I thought about spending a month at the museum, my response to her was that I would do it again if there were another opportunity. Working at the museum has been a wonderful experience."

2010-2011 Romare Bearden Fellow Announced
Michelle Shelley-Moseley has been selected as the 2010–2011 Romare Bearden Fellow. As the Bearden Fellow, Michelle will participate in weekend activities of the Community Partnerships department, teach in the ABC program, and help with Black History month exhibitions and programs, among other duties.

Michelle attended the University of Central Oklahoma where she received her BFA in studio arts as well as her Master of Education with an emphasis in art. She was chosen from a field of more than a dozen applicants to become the Museum's 12th Bearden Fellow.

Established in 1991, the Romare Bearden Post-Graduate Minority Fellowship was created to increase diversity of professionals within notable art museums nationwide.
