Henri Matisse Bathers with a Turtle Fall 1998 Bulletin

Henri Matisse Bathers with a Turtle Fall 1998 Bulletin

$5.00

The seminal painting, Bather's with a Turtle, by Henri Matisse is the subject of this Museum Bulletin prepared in memory of Joseph Pulitzer, Jr., who donated the painting to the Museum in 1964.

An essay by Yve Alain Bois considers the painting's meaning in terms of Matisse's ongoing dialogue with Picasso. The essay by John Elderfield analyzes the painting in terms of symbol, language, and sexuality within Matisse's oeuvre and within the history of the painting. Laurie A. Stien provides a detailed history of the painting from early conversations between the artist and Karl Ernst Osthaus, its first owner, to its shameful appropriation and sale by the National Socialists, to its presentation to the Museum by the Pulitzers in 1964.

79 pages; 8 1/2 x 11 inches.
