This exhibition featured nearly 70 paintings and works on paper by Vincent van Gogh and his Paris avant-garde contemporaries including Charles Angrand, Louis Anquetin, Emile Bernard, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro, Lucien Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This companion publication takes a new look at van Gogh's interaction with the disparate generation of artists who followed in the wake of the Impressionists and sought to define a new avant-garde in the vibrant art world of Paris during the second half of the 1880s and early '90s. Their artistic experiments resulted in an extraordinary range of styles and movements. Van Gogh identified these artists as the painters of the "petit boulevard," a term that reflected a desire to distinguish them from the more established Impressionists, the painters of the "grand boulevard."
