German Art Now features more than 40 paintings, sculptures, and photographs from the Saint Louis Art Museum's renowned collection of 20th-century German art. It evaluates the innovation, expansiveness, and international impact of German art produced during the second half of the 20th century. German artists living and working in the aftermath of war, their country divided, faced societal issues of isolation and the loss of national identity. The artists represented in German Art Now are Georg Baselitz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, Jörg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth. Curator and author Cornelia Homburg says, "The time is right to begin to evaluate their international impact."
