Beyond Golden Clouds: Japanese Screens hardcover
$55.00
Part utilitarian and part artistic expression, the Japanese folding screen has been an integral part of Japanese culture since the 16th century. More so than smaller painting formats, the screen is the canvas upon which Japanese artists have historically realized their most expansive visions, which is why they are often career-defining masterpieces. Richly decorated with bright pigments on beautiful gold backgrounds, the screens date from the mid-16th century through the late 20th century.
Together, the collections of Japanese folding screens from the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago comprise the first major exhibition to feature traditional Japanese screens on paper or silk along with modern and contemporary examples in less orthodox media such as lacquer and ceramic. The exhibition and catalogue offer a rare and welcome chance for Museum visitors to see numerous impressive works together and experience the collective impact of these large-scale works.
The book features full-color reproductions of each screen as well as illuminating and engaging entries on each screen.
