Across her wide-ranging practice of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and video, German/Brazilian artist Janaina Tschäpe investigates observed and imagined views of the landscape, filtered through perception and memory. Her 2013 video, The Ocean Within, exemplifies Tschäpe's great interest in the ocean and her characteristic interpretation of it as mysterious, dreamlike, and fantastical.

Her focus on the landscape and seascape derives from her reading of such views as equivalent of time's passages. She has explained: "Landscape is almost like measuring time; you look at something and try to find out where it ends. So the contemplation of a landscape is always a search, the search for something new, the search of time."

Born in 1973 in Munich, Janaina Tschäpe was raised in São Paulo. She studied fine art at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg and received her Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 1998. Solo exhibitions include those held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson (2014); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2008); Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2006); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2004); and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2001). Tschäpe has participated in group exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. (2014); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2013); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2009); Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Brazil (2008); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus (2005), among others.
