We invite proposals for presentations that inform and inspire, are timely and topical, and reflect the theme of the Symposium, Currents in Museum Education: Gateway to the Best. Breakout sessions should appeal to a broad docent audience. This Symposium offers the opportunity for all docents to learn from outstanding programs, reflect on their own needs, and pursue challenging new ideas.

Breakout Presentation Requirements:

  • Presentations/panels should be 55 minutes in length.
  • Presenters must provide their own materials and should feature ideas that they have helped to develop.
  • All proposals and presentations must include at least one active docent.
  • Programs should offer practical steps and be applicable to a wide range of institutions.
  • Audience questions/participation should be built into each proposal.
  • Handouts are highly encouraged.

Session Description:
An abstract describing your proposal must accompany all application forms and should include:

  • Learning objectives and projected outcomes
  • The evaluation criteria used to support the objectives
  • A description of how the proposal capitalizes on the role of the docent
  • A description of materials to be distributed
  • Inclusion of budgetary considerations to facilitate your program

Submitting a Breakout Presentation:
The Program Committee will review all presentations and will make its decisions based on the timeliness, breadth, and appeal of the topic. An effort will be made to balance ideas that inform all types of museums and represent the needs of varying regions of the country. Participants are invited to submit proposals by completing the accompanying application form. Application deadline extended to November 15, 2010!

NDS 2011 will be responsible for:

  • Inclusion of your institution's presentation in the Symposium Handbook
  • Location for the Breakout Session
  • Electrical outlets for AV equipment, LCD projectors, and full tech support
  • Secure environment once the display is set up
  • Notification of date and time of the presentation

Presenter will be responsible for:

  • NDS registration fee of $400, which includes meals, programs, and full participation in the Symposium*
  • All arrangements for lodging at the official NDS 2011 hotel
  • Camera-ready abstract for use in the Symposium handbook. Final abstract deadline is May 1, 2011.
  • At least two representatives, one a docent, to assist with the presentation
  • Laptop computer for use in the presentation
