The Saint Louis Art Museum Docents cordially invite you to join us for two days of Pre-Symposium Tours and Events designed to present the best of Saint Louis.
Private bus tour and site venue capacities are limited, so please register early.
All buses will be leaving from The Ritz-Carlton, Saint Louis.
Prices listed include transportation.
Box lunches can be pre-ordered at an additional cost; however, they are included in the all-day pre-tour. See Pre-Tour Tab for more details.
Tour assignment based on availability will be made at the time of online registration.
Tour cost is non-refundable after August 10, 2011.
In the event that a tour is cancelled due to low registration, you will be notified and given the option to join another tour.

Meet your fellow delegates and enjoy a wine and buffet dinner reception on the rooftop of one of St. Louis's newest luxury condominiums, with stunning terrace views of Clayton, downtown, and the Arch. Throughout the evening, delight in informal visits to major art collections within the building. A great way to begin our Symposium… a blend of art, food, and stimulating conversation!

The 19th century wealth and ethnic pride of St. Louis, once the fourth largest city in America, is today seen in well-preserved historic architecture with stunning revival churches and mausoleums designed by architects and artisans from around the world. With architectural historian Melanie Fathman as guide, tour National Historic Landmark churches, including the Romanesque Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis with the largest collection of mosaics in the world. While walking through the botanical paradise and architectural treasures of Bellefontaine Cemetery, learn about the "rural cemetery movement," the precursor to public parks in the United States. Many of the men and women who now reside at Bellefontaine contributed conspicuously to the westward expansion of our country, notably William Clark. Enjoy lunch in romantic Tower Grove Park, one of the few parks on the National Register of Historic Landmarks and a Victorian masterpiece.

Enjoy spectacular views and incredible art in two luxury condominium buildings near historic Forest Park. The first of four collections features world-class European 16th and 17th-century sculpture and engravings, with emphasis on the works of Rembrandt and Dürer. Next, for a more contemporary focus on 20th and 21st-century artists of international reputation, see works by Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Antony Gormley, and Agnes Martin. In the second building, explore works on paper, including fabulous prints and drawings by contemporary American artists from the 1970s to the present. The fourth collection presents an eclectic group of contemporary artists working in a variety of media, including Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Chuck Close, Kiki Smith, and many more.

The first stop features an American Regionalist collection with paintings dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. The collection emphasizes works by Thomas Hart Benton and Joe Jones and is housed in an incredible turn-of-the-century home. This is your chance to see the interior of one of St. Louis's famed "private place houses." Next, take an architectural drive-by and view a 1904 World's Fair neighborhood for a Meet Me in St. Louis moment. Then, visit a stunning collection of American Impressionist works. These two houses are perfect settings for a spectacular look at early 20th-century American art.

St. Louis is recognized for its preservation of diverse 19th and 20th-century neighborhoods and private places. Walk the old French lanes of the Soulard Market neighborhood, tour the opulent high-Victorian Campbell House, and wander through gardens in private Portland Place. Washington University Associate Professor Emeritus Jim Harris discloses entertaining "insider" stories of historic St. Louis neighborhoods, homes, and residents.

Within this 2,200-acre tract that was home to up to 20,000 inhabitants lie the archaeological remnants of the largest and most sophisticated prehistoric Native American city north of Mexico. From 700–1400 AD, the Mississippians constructed a complex religious, political, economic, and cultural center that included over 120 monumental mounds. Site manager, scholar, and author William Iseminger shares his expertise on this ancient metropolis, enhancing a docent-led exploration of the interpretive center and the extensive grounds.

Tour three outstanding homes in St. Louis's premier residential suburb – each with a distinctive collection. Warm and welcoming describes your first stop. Enjoy beautiful antique furniture, Japanese scrolls, paintings by European artists such as Henri Matisse and Josef Albers, and American prints. At the next home, delight in the color and energy of Fauve masters such as Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, Henri Matisse and Robert and Sonia Delaunay, complemented by silver and Tiffany glass. The third collection focuses on the contemporary. See works by internationally-acclaimed sculptors Louise Bourgeois, Lynda Benglis, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, and Olafur Eliasson. And, don't miss the large-scale contemporary photography by Tina Barney, Robert Polidori, and Vik Muniz in this amazing setting. These collections are showcased in homes worthy of review themselves.

Enjoy three very different, very passionate collecting visions. The first collection focuses on contemporary American craft, with ceramics, glass, wood, fiber, and works on paper….a multimedia feast for the eyes! Next, visit a premiere post-WWII American Art collection with works by Frank Stella, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Diebenkorn, and Donald Judd. This wonderful collection also includes Chinese antiquities and furniture by Diego Giacometti, and is housed in a 1912 English Gothic Revival Home. To cap off the day, see a compelling photography collection with images by outstanding women photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Artists of note include Gertrude Käsebier, Dorthea Lange, and Cindy Sherman.

Our first stop is Laumeier Sculpture Park, where monumental contemporary sculpture by internationally recognized artists blends into the 105-acre natural environment. Next we will visit Saint Louis's first building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Located in suburban Ebsworth Park, it is notable for its architectural integrity, as well as for retaining all of its original, Wright-designed furnishings and fabrics. This Usonian design home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Founded in 1859, the Missouri Botanical Garden is the nation's oldest botanical garden in continuous operation and is designated a National Historic Landmark. The Garden offers 79 acres of beautiful horticultural display, including a 14-acre Japanese strolling garden, the largest in the Western hemisphere; the Climatron, a geodesic dome holding 1,400 species of plants in a natural, tropical setting; and the recently renovated Linnean House, an historic 1882 greenhouse conservatory. Docent-led tours provide insight on the diverse gardens and the important international horticultural research sponsored here.

Docents will give the "inside scoop," plus an in-depth look at the Zoo's award-winning exhibits, philosophy, and mission as an international leader in animal management, research, conservation, education, and guest experiences.

An iconic symbol of American history, the Gateway Arch is a dramatic memorial to Thomas Jefferson's role in westward expansion and to the explorers and pioneers who shaped its history. Dr. Robert Moore, Jr., National Park Service historian and prolific author, will share the Arch's fascinatingstory. This saga ranges from St. Louis's 19th-century history to the design and construction of this 630-foot engineering marvel in the 1960s to the recent international design competition for the Arch grounds' re-design. Tour includes a viewing of the award-winning movie of the Arch construction, a visit to the Museum of Westward Expansion, and a tram ride to the top (for the first forty people who register)for a spectacular view that the pioneers were never able to enjoy.
