The Docent Council at the Art Museum at the University of Kentucky wanted to honor docents' work and began collecting contributions to purchase art for the museum's permanent collection. Art pieces are selected based on their appeal to young visitors and their significance to the museum's holdings. Docents visit studios and galleries to educate themselves, and, in concert with the museum's director and curator, purchase works which enhance the museum's collection and educational mission.

The reinstallation of one of the DAM's significant collections prompted the docents to craft tours that acknowledge tradition and celebrate contemporary native artists, incorporate innovative technology, balance the needs of school curricula and strengths of the collection, and more. We will explore how docents present a collection of 400,000 rare books and manuscripts to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Including such techniques as: knowing the history of the Library; familiarity with collectors and their philosophy of collecting; providing "hands-on viewing" of treasures; and discussing history of the writing styles and the art of book printing.

Showcase presenters will communicate about the skills with which they motivate a public from a range of backgrounds and experiences to learn the history of the Holocaust and its lessons of prejudice reduction and the consequences of indifference. Through an understanding of this tragic history, docents attempt to instill an awareness of the importance of remaining vigilant and willing to act to make a better world.

We will challenge the practice of only talking about collections that are on display by presenting reasons for introducing objects that are in storage and our strategies for doing it successfully. We will include examples of tour techniques and materials, informational handouts, and an idea-sharing center, where docents can communicate their ideas, questions, and concerns about this tour strategy.

At a pretend dinner party, students read a script to play the roles of notable people who have contributed to the heritage and development of the Ohio Valley. Students placed three-dimensional representations for these significant people/ events on an interactive timeline, and discussed related works of art in the galleries.

Through outreach collaboration between TMA and Toledo-area community groups, books are read and integrated with the TMA collection. Docent-led tours bring selected books alive via examination of relevant artifacts, studies of period art and/or exploration of cultures.
