Painting Detail

The following details, taken from the right panel of the triptych, provide captivating, up close views of the paint surface. Despite working on the triptych for over a decade, Monet's brushwork is energetic, fresh and exciting. The images also reveal the numerous colors and complicated layering of Monet's late paint surfaces.

Notice the texture and thickness of the paint strokes. Much of the brushwork on the painting’s surface is wet over dry, meaning that paint was applied across lower layers that were already dry. Monet’s brush often skipped across the lower paint textures producing exciting brush marks and color combinations.
