SUMMARY:Art Speaks: The Creation and Use of Aso Oke Prestige Cloth from Nigeria
DESCRIPTION:Join Nichole Bridges\, the Morton D. May Curator of the Arts of Africa\, Oceania\, and the Americas and co-curator of Aso Oke: Prestige Cloth from Nigeria\, for a brief introduction to the exhibition followed by a conversation about aso oke textiles between moderator Bukky Gbadegesin\, associate professor of art history at Saint Louis University; artist Nengi Omuku; and independent curator Anthony Agbapuonwu. The conversation will explore personal connection and knowledge of the three fundamental types of aso oke textiles created by Yoruba weavers in southwestern Nigeria for celebratory and ceremonial occasions from the early 19th to late 20th century\, as well as the ways contemporary artist Nengi Omuku incorporates these textiles into her work. \nParticipants will receive Zoom information after registering. This event will have automated closed captions. A recording of the program may be posted on SLAM’s YouTube channel and at slam.org at a later date.
