SUMMARY:Art Speaks: Narrative in the Work of Faith Ringgold\, Glenn Ligon\, and Kerry James Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Join Hannah Klemm\, associate curator of modern and contemporary art\, and Victoria McCraven\, 2020–2021 Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellow\, as they discuss contemporary works by Black artists in the Museum’s collection. Faith Ringgold\, Glenn Ligon\, and Kerry James Marshall all use forms of storytelling to articulate the politics of identity and explore narrative content through a combination of language\, abstraction\, and representation. This program will feature works from the 1990s in the Museum’s collection in which the artists examined the conditions of African American life after the civil rights movement. Ringgold\, Ligon\, and Marshall emphasized everyday\, individual experiences while reflecting on historical contexts that spoke to their contemporary moment. \nThis virtual program will take place via Zoom and will include opportunities for participants to ask questions with the Q&A feature. Attendees’ mics and cameras will not be activated. \nAttendees must register to receive the Zoom link. Capacity for the live program is limited. \nA closed-captioned recording of the program will be available on the Museum’s YouTube channel in the weeks following.
