Join Amy Torbert, assistant curator of American art, for an introduction to one of the Museum’s newest acquisitions, Daniel Interpreting to Belshazzar the Handwriting on the Wall (1775) by Benjamin West. How did West become the first American artist to achieve international fame despite humble beginnings in colonial Pennsylvania? How did he and his contemporaries respond artistically and politically to the American Revolution? What were the circumstances that lead SLAM to acquire this painting? This presentation will explore these questions and more as we discuss the birth of American art and politics. Lunch will be provided.
Reservations and advanced payment are required.
