SUMMARY:Exploring with the Artist—Impressions of Nature
DESCRIPTION:In this interdisciplinary workshop\, high school students will visit the exhibition Women Impressionists and the Land to learn about the Impressionist movement and how landscape and nature imagery contributed to the rise in status of women artists in France during the years 1860–1910. Following the tour\, students will go outside with an artist instructor to create a series of mixed-media artworks inspired by nature and explore their relationship to the natural world through mindfulness and reflection. \nThis workshop is designed for students in grades 9–12. This program is free\, and transportation assistance is available for qualifying schools. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required\, and space is limited.

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I with the St. Louis International Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join SLAM for The Gleaners and I (2000)\, presented as part of Cinema St. Louis’s 35th-annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF). \nAn 1867 painting\, The Gleaners\, by Jean-François Millet inspired septuagenarian documentarian Agnès Varda to cross the French countryside to document people who scavenge. Taking everything including surplus in the fields\, rubbish in trashcans\, and oysters washed up after a storm\, the gleaners range from those sadly in need to those hoping to re-create the community activity of centuries past to still others who use whatever they find to cobble together a rough art. The film is highlighted by Varda’s amusing narration. \nThe film is not rated. The run time is approximately 1 hour\, 22 minutes.

Flow earned critical acclaim and won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for best animated feature. Writing in The New York Times\, critic Calum Marsh praised director Gints Zilbalodis for avoiding the sentimentality and predictability associated with animated films about animals. “The animals act like real animals\, not like cartoons or humans\, and that restraint gives their adventure an authenticity that\, in moments of both delight and peril\, makes the emotion that much more powerful\,” Marsh wrote. DESCRIPTION:Join SLAM and Nancy Mowll Mathews—the Eugénie Prendergast Senior Curator\, emerita at Williams College Museum of Art—to explore Cassatt’s choices of models\, costumes\, poses and settings for the works inspired by her own country living and the messages she wanted to convey about “the Land.” \nMary Cassatt\, whose family had numerous country homes over the years\, acquired her own\, the Château de Beaufresne\, at the age of 50. In this\, she matched her two brothers who built country mansions outside of Philadelphia. For Cassatt\, “the country” was a lifestyle\, and in her art\, she created the woman who embraced it. Mathews will explore Cassatt’s choices of models\, costumes\, poses\, and settings for the works inspired by her own country living and the messages she wanted to convey about the Land.

DESCRIPTION:Join SLAM for Séraphine (2008)\, presented as part of Cinema St. Louis’s 35th-annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF). \nThe film follows the story of the rise of primitivist painter and outsider artist Séraphine “de Senlis” Louis (Yolande Moreau)\, who toils as a maidservant in the homes of the bourgeoisie in Senlis\, France\, while painting secretly by candlelight in the evenings. \nThe film is not rated. The run time is approximately two hours\, five minutes.
