SUMMARY:Painting by Numbers: Creating Data-Driven Histories of Art
DESCRIPTION:The Ann W. Olin Endowed Lecture will be given by Diana Seave Greenwald\, William and Lia Poorvu Interim Curator of the Collection at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, and author of Painting by Numbers: Data-Driven Histories of Nineteenth-Century Art. \nDiana Seave Greenwald blends historical and social scientific methods to provide fresh insights into 19th-century art. In particular\, she will focus on a case study that combines theory from labor economics with data about works by 19th-century women artists. This insight into how artistic form and content change in response to demands on women’s time highlights structural barriers that still hamper 19th-century women artists’ posthumous reputations and continue to limit women artists’ accomplishments and recognition today. \nThis program will be offered in person at the Museum and will also be livestreamed. See below for ticketing and registration information. \nTickets for the on-site program may be reserved in person at the Museum’s Information Centers or through MetroTix at metrotix.com or 314.534.1111. All tickets reserved through MetroTix incur a service charge; the service charge is waived for tickets reserved at the Museum. \nFor information about the Museum’s safety protocols\, visit slam.org/covid-19-response. \nThis lecture will also be livestreamed for free via Zoom and will have automated closed captions. Livestream attendees must register to receive the Zoom link. \nA closed-captioned recording of the program may be posted on the Museum’s YouTube channel and at slam.org at a later date. \nRegister for livestream \nRegister for in person lecture
