SUMMARY:Virtual Symposium: Paintings on Stone
DESCRIPTION:This event occurred in the past. The recorded virtual programs are available below.  \nBoth days: 10 am–3 pm CT \nThe exhibition Paintings on Stone: Science and the Sacred\, 1530–1800 explores why artists began using stone supports and the role that stone played in the meaning of their artwork. In spite of excellent recent scholarship\, there are many issues surrounding the topic of painting on stone that remain unexamined or inadequately understood. This virtual symposium will address a variety of topics concerning the use of stone as a painting support. Designed to both complement and expand the scope of the exhibition\, presentations will include references to additional artists\, artworks\, types of stone\, and the collecting of stone paintings. \nThe virtual symposium is held in conjunction with the exhibition Paintings on Stone: Science and the Sacred\, 1530–1800\, on view at the Saint Louis Art Museum\, February 20–May 15\, 2022. \nThis virtual program will take place via Zoom and will include opportunities for participants to ask questions with the Q&A feature. Attendees’ mics and cameras will not be activated. This event will have automated closed captions. \nAttendees must register to receive the Zoom link. Capacity for the live program is limited. \nA closed-captioned recording of the program will become available on the Museum’s YouTube channel and website in the weeks following. \nThis symposium is sponsored by Phenix Marble Company and supported by a grant from the Samuel H.
