About the Exhibition

Every evening, a flock of wild rose-ringed parakeets take wing through the streets of Düsseldorf, Germany. Cyprien Gaillard’s silent film KOE follows these birds as they fly through the city and gather to sleep in the high-end neighborhood of Königsallee, a boulevard lined with luxury retail stores. Originally brought from Africa and Asia to Germany as pets, these green-feathered birds have infiltrated Düsseldorf’s urban environment and created their own niche in the local ecosystem.

Gaillard’s work, which spans photography, sculpture, and film, expands on the history of landscape painting and Land Art, raising questions around the repercussions of human intervention in nature. In KOE, the resettlement of rose-ringed parakeets in Germany alludes to themes of territorial shift and displacement.

Born in Paris in 1980, Gaillard lives in Berlin and New York. He has had numerous solo exhibitions including at MoMA PS1 in New York, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. KOE was previously screened at Art Basel Miami Beach. This will be the first exhibition of KOE in a museum in the United States.

The Museum’s New Media Series is devoted to showcasing film and video as an integral part of contemporary art practice. New Media Series: Cyprien Gaillard is curated by Hannah Klemm, assistant curator of modern and contemporary art.

Large print labels will be available for your own device or at the Taylor Hall Information Center on exhibition opening.
