Search Selection

There are five types of searches that provide different levels of specificity. Select the drop-down list, on the right side of the search box, to change which fields are searched:

  • General Search
    • The default selection covers the largest amount of fields and is the recommended starting point.
  • Artist / Culture
    • Search objects created by a specific artist, group, or culture.
  • Object Number
    • Every object is assigned a unique number. For example, Bathers with a Turtle is assigned 24:1964. Object numbers are found in labels, catalogues, articles, and object pages in the Online Collection.
  • Credit Line
    • Discover people credited for object acquisition, including gifts from donors, as well as copyright status and rights holders.
  • Gallery Number
    • The Saint Louis Art Museum contains over 100 galleries. Search for a gallery number to find objects currently on view. View the floorplan for an overview of galleries.

Filters

Use one or more filters below the search box to refine results. You can continue to add or remove filters while exploring the collection.

  • Geography
    • Select continents, regions, and countries to narrow your search. Specific locations like cities are indexed for searches, so include those in the search box.
  • Date
    • Year ranges assist navigating 5,000 years, from ancient to contemporary art.
  • Collection
    • Objects are distributed across departmental and curatorial areas.
  • Classification
    • Object types organize the collection based on form and function.
  • Theme
    • Objects are organized into general subjects and document depictions within art.
  • Style / Period
    • Objects are grouped into shared attributes from cultures, geography, and time. This filter is helpful when you are interested in movements, such as Impressionist art or the Harlem Renaissance.

Checkboxes

Checkboxes, found below filters, are quick and singular selections.

  • On View
    • The search page displays objects currently on view by default. Switch between objects currently installed in our galleries and objects off view.
  • Featured
    • Curatorial selections and public favorites are a convenient method to get started. Featured objects can be delivered to your inbox. Learn about Object of the Day and other Member benefits.
  • Outdoors
    • Outdoor objects and building facades can be explored every day, even while the Museum is closed. Explore objects in the Grace Taylor Broughton Sculpture Garden and the wider campus.
  • Public Domain
  • Recent Acquisitions
    • If you are looking for objects new to the Museum, you can limit results to objects that have been acquired this year plus the previous two years.

Sorting Results

Search results can be sorted by the following attributes:

  • Title
    • Alphabetical in ascending or descending order.
  • Artist / Culture
    • Alphabetical in ascending or descending order.
  • Object Number
    • Chronological in ascending or descending order. Year first, then the order acquired within that year.

Card and List View

Search results are displayed in a default card view, using a grid of images. List view is also available, using rows and columns to display additional object information. Select the card and list icons, located next to sorting options, to switch between card and list views.
