NOTES
At the 1904 World's Fair, Rookwood introduced an innovative translucent matte glaze called Vellum. Previous matte glazes were opaque, obscuring any design painted beneath them, but Vellum allowed for the combination of detailed decoration and a fashionable matte surface. On this vase, Frederick Rothenbusch employed the Vellum glaze over smooth slip painting to depict a stand of trees at dusk.
