NOTES
This chalice’s upward thrusting stem and flared bowl epitomize the soaring, expansive spirit of the Space Age, which began to influence silver design in the late 1950s. The flowing foot and stem and the flattened disc, elongated as if by centrifugal force, echo the era’s fluid, free-form, and sometimes otherworldly imagery. When it was shown in 1959, this chalice won first prizes at exhibitions of the Wichita Art Association in Kansas and the Metropolitan Church Federation of Greater St. Louis.
