NOTES
Edward Steichen’s photograph depicts an intense, close-up view of a sunflower, with each small petal in sharp focus. Steichen was both a painter and photographer before switching exclusively to photography, and was a master at controlling light and shadow to create a deep, beautiful range of tones. An accomplished gardener, Steichen used sunflowers as a favorite subject throughout his career, photographing them in all stages from seeds to fading blooms.
