NOTES
Besides being a prolific painter and printmaker, Max Beckmann also produced a small group of eight sculptures. This brooding self-portrait shows the seemingly world-weary artist with down-turned mouth and sagging eye pouches. The artist’s stern expression nonetheless seems to suggest defiance at a difficult time in his life when his career was increasingly threatened by the rise of the National Socialists.
