NOTES
Dressed in rich silks and surrounded by a halo of divine light, the seated figure is a lohan, a disciple of Buddha. His attentive servant holds a wooden staff as the lohan is greeted by a layman of the Buddhist faith. This humble act of veneration miraculously summons small five dragons who behold the spiritual meeting. They emerge from a sumptuous landscape of pine branches and rocks, delicately painted with semiprecious minerals of malachite and azurite and highlighted in gold.
