NOTES
This portrait of a bearded man wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a cloak over his dark clothing depicts the Jewish physician Ephraim Bueno. Rembrandt van Rijn's portrait of the physician helps illustrate the artist's connection with different groups in Amsterdam. Both Rembrandt and Bueno shared an interest in the city's medical communities, and both contributed to the publishing press owned by the Sephardic rabbi Menasseh ben Israel, who issued books on Jewish mysticism.

Notes:
[1] Camesina signed his name on the verso of this print and dated it "1812" [Lugt 429], presumably the year of purchase. Camesina is included in the historic provenances in the sale catalogues of de la Motte-Fouquet ["Catalogue Raisonné de la rare et précieuse Collection d'estampes anciennes et modernes, composant le cabinet de Mr. H. F. de la Motte Fouquet" at Weber and an der Kolk, Cologne, October 21-22, 1847, lot no. 155.]; Alferoff ["Catalogue de la Collection magnifique et d'un choix exquis d'estampes et d'eaux-fortes anciennes et modernes composant le cabinet de Mr. A. Alferoff à Bonn" at Jos. Maillinger de la Montmorillon'sche Kunsthandlung, Munich, May 10, 1869, lot no. 619]; Sträter ["Katalog der berühmten Sammlung von Kupferstichen, Radierungen, Holzschnitten, und Zeichnungen des verstorbenen Herrn Dr. August Straeter," H. G. Gutekunst, Stuttgart, May 10-14, 1898, lot no. 843]; and Perry ["Katalog der umfangreichen und Wertvollen Sammlungen der Herren Marsden J. Perry in Providence, R.I. (Amerika) und Fritz Rumpf in Potsdam enthaltend die Werke von Dürer und Rembrandt," H. G. Gutekunst, Stuttgart, May 18, 1908, lot no. 1330].

[2] Wolterbeek's signature [not in Lugt ] is only partially visible on the verso of this print; it may once have been more legible than it is now. His name is included in the historic provenance of the print given in the auction catalogues of de la Motte-Fouquet [see note [1]]; Alferoff [see note [1]]; and van den Zande ["Catalogue de la riche collection d'estampes et de dessins composant le cabinet de feu M. F. van den Zande" at Guichardot, Paris, France, April 30 and days following, 1855, lot no. 2287]. See also the catalogue of his sale, "Catalogue d'une très-belle collection d'estampes, A l'eau-forte et gravées au burin, principalement composées des produits magnifique de l'école hollandaise tant ancienne que moderne de feu Monsieur Pieter Wolterbeek" at de Vries Brondgeest Roos, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, May 6, 1845, lot no. 293.

[3] See the auction catalogue of Wolterbeek [see note [2]]. According to an annotation in the margin, this lot was purchased by "Weber." This may refer to the prolific German dealer and collector Hermann Weber of Bonn; however, Weber's collector's stamp, normally found on his prints, is not visible here. Alternatively, it may refer to the Brussels-based dealers, Weber and van der Kolk, active at that time, or another, unknown collector of that name.

[4] Henri Frédéric de la Motte-Fouquet's collector's mark appears on the verso of the print [Lugt 778]. His name is included in the historic provenance provided in the auction catalogues of Sträter [see note [1]]; Perry [see note [1]]; and van den Zande [see note [2]].

[5] See the auction catalogue, "Catalogue Raisonné de la rare et précieuse Collection d'estampes anciennes et modernes, composant le cabinet de Mr. H. F. de la Motte Fouquet" at Weber and an der Kolk, Cologne, October 21-22, 1847, lot no. 155.

[6] Godefroy is listed as a former owner in the sale catalogues of Alferoff [see note [1]] and van den Zande [see note [2]]. A partial mark which may be his [Lugt 1086; the circle is the same, but the lettering is not legible] appears on the verso.

[7] See the auction catalog "Catalogue de la belle collection d'estampes au nombre de dix a onze mille, composant le cabinet du sieur Godefroy, à Caen," Brière et Rubin, Caen, April 10, 1851, no lot numbers, p. 15. Result unknown.

[8] Van den Zande is listed as a former owner in the sale catalogues of Alferoff [see note [1]] and Sträter [see note [1]]. See Lugt 2680 suppl., but this mark is not on the print.

[9] See the auction catalogue, "Catalogue de la riche collection d'estampes et de dessins composant le cabinet de feu M. F. van den Zande" at Guichardot, Paris, France, April 30 and days following, 1855, lot no. 2287. Result unknown.

[10] A collector named Molasse [not in Lugt] is listed in the provenance for this print in the auction catalogues of Alferoff [see note [1]] and Sträter [see note [1]]. Based on Molasses's position in those provenances, the print appears to have been in his collection before Alferoff and after van den Zande.

[11] Alferoff's collector's mark appears on the verso of this print [Lugt 1727].

[12] See the auction catalogue, "Catalogue de la Collection magnifique et d'un choix exquis d'estampes et d'eaux-fortes anciennes et modernes composant le cabinet de Mr. A. Alferoff à Bonn" at Jos. Maillinger de la Montmorillon'sche Kunsthandlung, Munich, May 10, 1869, lot no. 619. Result unknown.

[13] Sträter's collector's mark appears on the verso of this print [Lugt 787].

[14] See the auction catalogue, "Katalog der berühmten Sammlung von Kupferstichen, Radierungen, Holzschnitten, und Zeichnungen des verstorbenen Herrn Dr. August Straeter," H. G. Gutekunst, Stuttgart, May 10-14, 1898, lot no. 843. Result unknown.

[15] Marsden Jasael Perry's collector's mark appears on the verso of this print [Lugt 1880].

[16] See the auction catalogue, "Katalog der umfangreichen und Wertvollen Sammlungen der Herren Marsden J. Perry in Providence, R.I. (Amerika) und Fritz Rumpf in Potsdam enthaltend die Werke von Dürer und Rembrandt," H. G. Gutekunst, Stuttgart, May 18, 1908, lot no. 1330. Result unknown.

[17] Davis's collector's mark appears on the verso of the print [Lugt 766]. According to a document dated October 26, 1950 that accompanied the loan of many of Davis's prints to the Museum, Davis purchased the print from Roullier in 1922 [SLAM document files].
