NOTES
Hiroshige is best known for his series of prints illustrating the seasonal changes of Japan’s landscape. Here he shows people crossing the Ohashi Bridge, trying to protect themselves from a sudden rain shower. A lone boatman punts a raft down the river, and the rain nearly obliterates the shoreline beyond.

Vincent van Gogh owned over 40 prints by Hiroshige, including this one, which he copied as the oil painting Japonaiserie: Bridge in Rain.
