NOTES
An aged man with a prisoner’s rope around his neck, clothed in a hooded, sackcloth robe, stares forward with an expression of resignation. Auguste Rodin represents Jean d’Aire, one of the six leaders of the French city of Calais who offered to sacrifice themselves to spare their city from destruction by English forces in 1347. The figure carries the key of the city to give to the English. This work is a reduction of the life-size figure in Rodin’s masterpiece, "The Burghers of Calais."
