NOTES
The rustic simplicity of this mill building in the Black Forest region of Germany appealed to Stieglitz, and he devised an interesting composition from the rooflines, the slats of the waterwheel, and the weatherworn pieces of timber. This image was made on an extended trip to Europe during which Stieglitz escaped the commercial bustle of New York City. His pictures from this trip are infused with a sense of nostalgia for what had been lost in late 19th-century modernization.
