NOTES
This print depicts the Main River in Frankfurt, where Max Beckmann lived from 1915 - 1933. The view is from the Lower Main Bridge, only steps away from Beckmann's residence at Schweizer Street No. 3 in the Sachsenhausen district. In preparation for this print, Beckmann stood on the bridge near his studio and sketched with minute detail the vast landscape before him. The broad river is flanked by moored landings and long boats while the Peace Bridge spans the scene in the distance. The cupola of the Städel Museum and the pointed roof of the Liebig House, the museum of medieval sculpture, are identifable on the opposite bank.
Provenance
c.1920 - 1981
Reinhard Piper (d.1953), Munich, Germany; his family, by inheritance [1]
1981/06/30 - 1986
Fielding Lewis Holmes, St. Louis, MO, USA, purchased through agent E. E. Lewis at auction "Aquarelle, Zeichnungen und Graphik des 20. Jahrhunderts," Karl & Faber, June 30, 1981, lot no. 215 [2]
1986 -
Saint Louis Art Museum, given by Fielding L. Holmes [3]
Notes:
The primary source of provenance is Fielding Lewis Holmes [information for appraisals form dated December 1986, SLAM document files]. Other supporting documents are noted.
[1] The Reinhard Piper collector's stamp is on the print's verso. Barbara Göpel mentions in her introductory essay in the 1981 Karl & Faber auction catalog that Piper began acquiring Beckmann's drawings and prints in 1920. Whereas "Main River Landscape" is not specifically mentioned, other works pertaining to the "Faces" portfolio are. It is likely that this work was among Piper's acquisitions during the 1920s.
[2] The auction featured Reinhard Piper's entire collection of drawings and prints. See auction catalog ["Aquarelle, Zeichnungen und Graphik des 20. Jahrhunderts." Karl & Faber, June 30, 1981, p.6]. It is mentioned in a note next to lot no. 215 on page 210 of this catalog that the work was sold to the dealer R.E. Lewis, San Rafael, California for Fielding Lewis Holmes.
