NOTES
Using existing mass media photographs from the 1960s, artist Robert Rauschenberg captured elements of the charged atmosphere and social and political upheaval of the decade. Created as a concept for a Newsweek magazine cover, Rauschenberg depicted key figures—such as astronaut Buzz Aldrin, musician Janis Joplin, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy, and civil-rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—and significant events like the Vietnam War and the 1967 Detroit Uprising. Rauschenberg wrote in an exhibition announcement that it was “conceived to remind us of love, terror, violence of the last 10 years. Danger lies in forgetting.”
