NOTES
In this photograph, a young woman walks along an empty lot littered with debris. Her pristine white dress offers a striking contrast to the rundown buildings and neighborhood that surround her. The photographer used dramatic light and shadow to further emphasize the difference between the woman's appearance and the desolation through which she walks. Roy DeCarava's compelling images of dignified subjects have helped make him one of the most revered and influential photographers of the past 50 years.
