NOTES
Propelled by a mechanical motor, feathers fan out in a circle, fall, and begin their slow rotation again. Rebecca Horn’s kinetic sculptures of moving feathers and wings suggest the way that animals and plants have been replaced by machines as objects of primary importance in modern cultures. Horn’s work also evokes the cyclical rhythms of nature and life—for example, the seasonal shedding of feathers. The synthesis of organic and mechanical elements in Feather Wheel results in a sculpture both theatrical and vulnerable.
