NOTES
In this mixed-media work, Robert Motherwell merges painting with collage elements, like sand and wood veneer. Though not representational, the work explores the relationship between reality and abstraction through the use of commonly found objects. Motherwell wrote that this collage was "made in East Hampton, Long Island, one winter. There is some sand in it and the colors have to do with the sand and sea in winter."

Notes:
[1] The catalogue of the Pulitzer collection names the Kootz Gallery as the first owner after the artist [Chetham, Charles Scott. "Modern Painting, Drawing & Sculpture Collected by Louise and Joseph Pulitzer Jr." Cambridge, MA: Fogg Art Museum, vol. 2, 1958, cat. no. 124].

[2] The accession number assigned by the Museum of Modern Art (1.46) indicates that it was acquired in 1946. The painting was published with this information in 1948 [Barr, Alfred H. "Paintings and Sculpture in the Museum of Modern Art." New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1958, cat. no. 551].

[3] The Museum of Modern Art exchanged the work with the Kootz Gallery as part of a payment for a later oil [undated information sheet, SLAM document files].

[4] The catalogue of the Pulitzer collection indicates that the work was acquired by the Pulitzers from Kootz Gallery on February 15, 1951 (see note [1]).

[5] A deed of gift from Joseph Pulitzer Jr. records the date on which the painting was given to the Museum [deed of gift, dated December 15, 1955, SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control of the City Art Museum, December 8, 1955.
