[1] Per Karl Knaths papers, 1890-1971 from the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. The papers include a Paul Rosenberg & Co. document indicating that the painting was consigned by the artist by November 14, 1947 and a letter from Paul Rosenberg & Co. to the artist with information pertaining to the sale of his painting [document, dated November 14, 1947 and letter, dated November 26, 1947, SLAM document files].
[2] A letter from the Karl Knaths papers from Paul Rosenberg & Co. to the artist, states that Mr. May was interested in acquiring "Horse Mackerel" [letter, dated November 15, 1947, SLAM document files]. Mr. May may well have been the unnamed purchaser of the painting mentioned in a later letter to the aritst [letter, dated November 26, 1947, SLAM document files]. In any case, Mr. and Mrs. Morton D. May owned the painting by 1948 when they lent it to the City Art Museum of Saint Louis for "St. Louis Collections: An Exhibition of 20th Century Art" ["St. Louis Collections: An Exhibition of 20th Century Art." "Bulletin of the City Art Museum of Saint Louis" 33, no. 3 (1948): 8.]
