NOTES
Philip Guston’s evolution from his use of bright colors in the 1950s toward a style of single dark patches intertwined in gray can be seen in Group I. The brooding palette of dark grays and blacks allowed Guston to separate the square figures from the lattice-like back-ground and enabled him to communicate a pictorial narrative while still working in an abstract style. The title of this painting emphasizes the expressive qualities of his brushwork, and the arrangement of the patches suggests a massing together, a crowd, or a grouping.
