NOTES
In this vibrant work, pools and sweeps of thinned liquid paint flow against a rich blue background. Helen Frankenthaler experimented continuously with paint and its properties for over 50 years and was known for inventing the technique of staining the raw canvas with thinned, poured paint. Extremely responsive to her surroundings, Frankenthaler often made watercolors in reaction to places she visited on her travels. While her canvases are abstractions, they often evoke elements of landscapes or figural forms. According to Frankenthaler, “my pictures are full of climates, abstract climates. They’re not nature per se, but a feeling.”
