Notes:
The main source for this provenance is the catalogue of the Pulitzer collection, cat. no. 49 [Chetham, Charles Scott. “Modern Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture Collected by Louise and Joseph Pulitzer, Jr.” Vol. 1. Cambridge: President and Fellows of Harvard College, 1957, cat. no. 49]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.
[1] Following Edwin Suermondt’s death in 1923, his collection was left to his heirs: his wife, Martha, and his two children [Mahler, Luise. “Suermondt, Edwin (also Carl Friedrich Edwin Suermondt).” Index of Historic Collectors and Dealers of Cubism. Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art (August 2018)]. If this object was left to Martha Suermondt, it would possibly have been part of the Suermondt-Vömel Collection in Düsseldorf, Germany following Martha's marriage to Alex Vömel in 1927.
[2] Fine Arts Associates is listed in the provenance in the catalogue with no date for the transfer of ownership [see unnumbered note]. Fine Arts Associates was founded c.1940.
