NOTES
Kawase Shinobu's celadons are internationally prized for their precise potting, perfectly uniform glazes, rich color, glossy finish, and graceful shapes. Seeking to recreate the celadon glaze of China's Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279), he made three trips in the early 1970s to the National Palace Museum in Taipei to study its Chinese celadons. Kawase obtains the finest porcelain clay from China and Japan, with uncompromising standards for elasticity, purity, and rate of shrinkage. After throwing the basic form, he waits until it is semi-dry and then continues the shaping process, moistening the clay several times so that he can create curves and crooked edges.
