NOTES
This small ceramic teapot is hand shaped and covered with a thin, creamy glaze. Its lid is thin and leaf-like with a simple half-loop handle.
In addition to creating beautiful poetry and calligraphy, the artist was also an accomplished potter who created beautiful implements that were used for the preparation and drinking of both Japanese-style powdered and whipped green tea (matcha) and Chinese-style steeped green tea (sencha). She personalized these utilitarian wares by incising many of her favorite thirty-one syllable waka poems onto the bodies of teapots, teabowls, and teacups before they were glazed and fired.
