NOTES
Apartment buildings adapted to the hilly terrain of San Francisco are the focus of this photograph by Max Yavno. His tight geometric composition balances the formal elements of windows, garage doors, and varied changes in elevation. While the architecture itself is unassuming, the image derives a strong visual power from the march of shadows that moves at a diagonal across the surface from right to left.
Yavno was a talented and meticulous printer, and this rhythm is something that he intensified through his work within the darkroom. His notes, such as exposure times, on back of the photograph reveal his extensive processes. They also underscore the fact that this picture is not an objective document but an interpretation, a visual construction.
