NOTES
Whistler's etching shows a boy dipping his foot in a canal while sitting on steps leading to an enclosed garden. Whistler sketched the image directly onto the prepared metal plate while traveling by gondola or on foot through the city of Venice. Whistler often reworked the lines on etching plates and printed a variety of revised impressions, known as states. He produced at least nine different states of this etching before canceling the plate in July 1887.
