NOTES
Stillness, solitude, and a sense of the infinite pervade this landscape, reflecting a universal fascination with vast expanses. The artist distills the environment down to its primordial essentials of air and water, communicating an impression of limitless space. Hiroshi Sugimoto's technically exquisite photograph depicts a kind of ancient mystery in which the primeval forces that bound early man and Nature together are resurrected through a meditative and delicate image. The one constant in Sugimoto's work is the horizon line placed at the compositions' exact center. The result is a body of work that is deceptively simple and reductive, but which, on close inspection, reveals the constant fluctuation of form and light.
