Notes:
[1] Professor Rudolf A. Meyer Riefstahl, had his doctorate in art history and was an expert on Islamic art. In 1924 he joined the faculty of New York University's new Institute of Fine Arts. Between 1924 and 1936, he visited and lived in many Middle Eastern countries, and this object was most likely acquired during this period. A similar detached folio from a Qur'an manuscript was given by Prof. Riefstahl to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 1930 (accession no. 30.45).
