NOTES
Miyashita Zenji works in the tradition of colored Kyoto ware. His vessels are constructed using cardboard templates. After the pieces are assembled and dried, successive wafer-thin layers of colored clay are applied in irregular strips. Miyashita's palette of nearly a hundred colors has been carefully prepared from mineral pigments and clay. To enhance their radiance, he sprays on a transparent glaze and fires for a long time (15 hours) in a gas kiln at a heat of 1250ºC. The brilliant colors add depth to his sculptural vessels and create associations with landscapes, drifting clouds, and rolling waves.
