NOTES
Facets of green, yellow, brown, gray, and black give form to this Cubist rendering of Saint Denis, a northern suburb of Paris located on the banks of the River Seine.
By 1910 Georges Braque had fully rejected the simplified lines and vivid colors of Fauvism, and favored instead, limited chromatic range and an abundance of planes. Here the familiar sights of St. Denis-the church steeple, houses, and river-are rendered indistinct by a mosaic of shaded geometric forms that together offer an abstracted view of the town.
Provenance
- 1946
Mercèdés Rousso, Paris, France [1]
1946 - 1956
Marcus and Bettie J. Rice, St. Louis, MO, USA, purchased from Mercèdés Rousso

Notes:
[1] Per Museum accession record [SLAM document files]. Mercèdés Rousso was the associate of the art dealer Léopold Zborowski (1889-1932). After Zborowski's death in 1932 the gallery transferred to Rousso, and she continued the business. She retired only two or three years before her death, in the 1980's. Unfortunately, there are no existing papers relating to the gallery [email from Perrine LeBlan with notes from her telephone conversation with Pierre Rousso, Mercèdés Rousso's nephew, October 17, 2003, SLAM document files].
[2] Deed of gift from Marcus Rice dated October 10, 1956 [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Administrative Board of Control and the Advisory Committee of the City Art Museum, October 11, 1956.
